Options in Refractive Surgery!
Many patients will always wonder what type of refractive procedure they should undergo.
Well what are the new options that patients have these days? Over time our armentarium has expanded tremendously in terms of refractive procedures. One can choose from PRK, (Standard VS Custom), LASIK (Standard VS Custom), ILASIK (Bladeless procedure using the Intralase laser to fashion the corneal flap), and ICLs or implantable intraocular lenses (IOL) for higher degree of myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism or in people not suitable for corneal surgery.
If cost is not an issue then we at BEC advice the majority of our patients to undergo Custom PRK or Custom LASIK. These procedures have been proven in a majority of studies to yield better quality of vision and more patient satisfaction.
Blade Vs Laser: In this part of the world cost is still a major concern, so we believe that the patient can still undergo a LASIK with the microkeratome and benefit from an excellent procedure.
As for the implantable ICL, we reserve them for those individual that cannot undergo a corneal procedure such as PRK or LASIK. One should bear in mind also that the expenses are much higher as the procedure involves a surgical theater and the price of the ICL which does not come cheap.
