At ECC we have recently acquired the latest generation Nd.Yag laser from Nidek. This laser is used to treat different eye disorders namely:
-Posterior Capsule Opacification (PCO)
-Narrow Angles and Angle Closure Glaucoma
Posterior Capsule Opacification
This condition occurs following cataract surgery if the posterior capsule is left untouched. It occurs days (as in children), months and even years after cataract surgery. Patients usually present complaining of decrease in their visual acuity with similar symptoms prior to cataract surgery. that is why this is known as "secondary cataract".
The posterior capsule, which is left intact during surgery, holds the new IOL or lens. Cells from the lens equator use the posterior capsule as glide and cover over the time the central portion thus causing a decrease in vision. The new square-edge IOL help in decreasing the migration of these cells and cause less PCO than rounded-edge IOL.
The Yag laser is used to create an opening in the posterior capsule thus restoring good vision. The procedure is painless and patients can return to normal activity immediately after the procedure with optimal results few hours following the procedure.
Narrow Angles or Angle Closure Glaucoma
When a patient presents with an attack of angle closure and high eye pressure, the Yag laser is used to perform an iridotomy or a hole in the peripheral iris to help the fluid trapped behind it gain the angle and lower the pressure. In narrow angles, the eye pressure is usually normal but angle closure is imminent and the iridotomy will prevent such an attack. Angle closure glaucoma is on the rise worldwide and with the availability of such a device, we at ECC urge you to have an eye exam and prevent such a disastrous disease from even occuring.
